JNEIRO JAREL (AKA DR. WHO DAT?)
LIVE ON ANDREW MEZA'S BTS RADIO ('07)

My first official introduction with Jneiro Jarel was 2005's Three Piece Puzzle. After hearing tracks like "Do Yo Thang" (an anthem I continually play out today), "Big Bounce Theory" and "Lock Down", I knew there was so much more that JJ could hit you with.

Unknowingly, Three Piece Puzzle may have been the first time I heard anyone blending more traditional aspects of boom-bap production with a futuristic approach. There was an emphasis on basslines and broken drum patterns that had recently been catching my ear. Music that worked powerfully on its own without vocals. It wasn't until looking back on his catalog that I heard he'd been developing this sound since 2000. To me, it was a new style, for Jneiro, that was just him.

Just like everyone else at the time, Jneiro and I linked up on MySpace and struck up what is now one of my closets partnerships. A year after Three Piece Puzzle, he dropped the scene defying Beat Journey album under his aliases, Dr. Who Dat? a must have for any fan of instrumental beats.

In '07, he released Craft Of The Lost Art as Shape of Broad Minds, his most defining work yet. Craft Of The Lost Art blended the finest elements of Three Piece Puzzle and Beat Journey together to capture future hip-hop at its finest.

Jneiro Jarel is a true OG, leader of new sounds and one of the most under appreciated producers out today. Put his collaboration LP with Khujo Goodie, Willie Isz, Beat Journey or Timeless Vol. 1 next to each other and you won't even realize it's the same person. There's been countless times where he'll send me a track and I have to ask if he really did it.

He created this set exclusively for BTS Radio in 2007. To this day, includes various unreleased material and tracks that you'll only get here. Listen closely and you'll hear an early collaboration with Jneiro Jarel and...Flying Lotus on the mic.

"If you don't know me by now, you best study up and get smart."
